S2 E6 The Cosplay Crunch W/ Yin Photo

Shoot me from my good side! In this episode of Cosplay Crunch, we invite guest Yin Photo, AKA Jacqui Zhou, to have an extensive conversation about photography within cosplay. We explore the importance of different equipment, the elements of a good photo, and emphasize the creative process behind capturing cosplay in its best light. We break down the dynamics of working with new and repeat clients, and the challenges of location versus convention shoots, and our DREAM locations for future photos. We touch on the social media shift from traditional photography to short-form video content, and the STRUGGLE of satisfying our boba cravings amidst rising costs. Stay until the end where we dish about acceptable photo turnaround times, over-editing, and the uglier side of cosplay photography…

Jacqueline Zhou is a photographer based in Houston, Texas. She always grew up having a passion for art and wanted to be a children’s book illustrator as a teenager. Her gateway to the cosplay community and a new artistic medium began in 2011, when she attended her first convention and was inspired by the passion and creativity of those in the community. She finally began cosplay photography when she happened to take a photography class in college and decided to bring her shiny new camera to Ikkicon in 2016.  She finds satisfaction in working with new cosplayers, offering guidance on posing, and helping everyone shine on camera. Jacqueline is an advocate for diversity in the community and loves to capture the unique stories and experiences of all cosplayers. Her preferred shooting style is simply using natural light and finding creative potential in different convention spaces. Beyond photography, her interests include traveling, frequenting the artist alley, going to concerts, and trying new cuisines.
